FAQ: Joining Dorset Software
If I join Dorset Software, what hours should I expect to work?
At Dorset Software your working week is 40 hours initially. For the duration of your 2-year Graduate Training Scheme this includes an average of 2.5 hours of dedicated learning time each week. After you've completed the programme your working week is 37.5 hours.
We have a flexi-time system that employees can use after their probationary period; this means you work core hours but around these you are able to work the hours that suit you.
How much does Dorset Software pay graduates?
For Developers, whilst in your initial training period, the basic salary is £27,680. Once you've completed this (usually after around 5 months) you move to a basic salary of £31,780.
We reward you for your hard work during the early years at Dorset Software with regular and generous pay reviews . After roughly 2 years, you can expect to be earning around £50,000. Additional expenses are added on top of your salary when working at a client site.
What happens when you go to work at a client site?
When you go to a client site, all that you have to do is turn up for work each day and do a good job when you're there! We take the worry of accommodation off your hands - we make all the necessary arrangements and pay your rent and expenses.
We also provide you with a daily subsistence allowance and pay for your travel back home each weekend. If necessary, we can even provide you with a hire car if transport in that area is particularly bad.
When working at a client site you won't feel isolated from the rest of the team at Dorset Software. Usually employees are on assignments with other Dorset Software colleagues, but even if this doesn't happen we're in regular contact with you.
Do I need a driving licence or car?
No - many of our employees travel by train when they need to work onsite.
During my employment, I might like to continue with my education. Can I do this at Dorset Software?
We're happy to support those who want to pursue further study opportunities related to their role. We're currently funding several courses and consider these on a case by case basis.
Can I take time out before I join Dorset Software?
We are very flexible with regard to starting dates, therefore if you are looking to take a break between graduating and employment or a few months to go travelling, please let us know. We are always happy to make job offers to suitable graduates who want to take time out, as long as you firmly accept our offer and we can contact you throughout this time.
Normally we will stay in contact with you via email, just to let you know that we have not forgotten about you! This flexibility also allows you to make the most of your time out without worrying about finding work on your return.
Even if you have accepted our offer and then decide you would like to take some time to travel, we may be able to accommodate this.
I have been made a conditional offer but have not achieved my 2:1. Can I still work for Dorset Software?
If you do not get the 2:1 that you were expecting, please let us know as soon as possible as this gives us more time to discuss your application.
Once we know that you did not get your desired result, we usually discuss this both with you and an academic supervisor. This helps to clarify any mitigating circumstances and also helps us to get a better understanding of your true capability.
As soon as a decision has been made we will let you know if we are able to confirm your offer of employment.
